3A molecular sieves are typically produced by exchanging potassium ions into 4A molecular sieves (originally sodium-based). They are primarily used for adsorbing water molecules, making them ideal for drying gases and liquids such as LNG, petroleum, ethanol, and more.
For insulating glass applications, only 3A molecular sieve is considered suitable, due to the following reasons:
Selective Water Adsorption:
3A molecular sieves exclusively adsorb water molecules without absorbing oxygen or nitrogen from the air, thus maintaining the pressure balance inside the insulating glass unit (IGU).
Mild Alkalinity:
With a pH value of around 10.5, 3A molecular sieves are weakly alkaline, ensuring they do not corrode or damage aluminum spacer bars within the IG unit.
Rapid Water Absorption Rate:
3A molecular sieves offer a fast water adsorption speed, reaching up to 0.04 g/s, effectively preventing condensation inside the glass units.
High Water Absorption Capacity:
They have a water absorption capacity of ≥ 20%, ensuring long-lasting protection against moisture over the life span of the insulating glass.
Stable Performance at Room Temperature:
3A molecular sieves do not release absorbed water (no hydro-desorption) under room temperature conditions, maintaining the internal dryness of the IGU.
